In celebration of one of the desert’s most diverse fruits, the Prickly Pear Fest is being presented by the Desert Awareness Committee on Sat., Nov. 2 from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m at the Holland Community Center, located at 34250 N. 60th Street in Scottsdale. The event is free but donations are welcome.

This annual event is part of the edible and medicinal desert series offered by the Desert Awareness Committee that provides community wide programs on sustainable desert living and monthly public tours of the Desert Awareness Park.

The Fest involves demonstrations showing techniques for gathering and preparing prickly pear fruits as well as seeing how prickly pear smoothies are made. You can also hear about the history of the prickly pear plant and more.

Other desert foods will be featured at various demonstration stations both indoors and outdoors. There will be four hourly informative presentations including a cooking demonstration inside the Holland Center. Attendees can also check out the “Our Tastes of the Desert” cookbook by the Desert Awareness Committee at the event as well.
