Muskies silence Lions in state quarterfinals, 3

WEXFORD — The District 10 champion Jamestown Muskies defeated the District 5

WEXFORD — The District 10 champion Jamestown Muskies defeated the District 5 champion Chestnut Ridge Lions 3-0 at North Allegheny High School, Thursday.

The Muskies threw the first punch when Savannah Thurber clobbered a 2-run homer in the first inning scoring Reese Schaller, taking an early 2-0 lead.

Chestnut Ridge pitcher Britni Motter was not deterred as she retired the next 7 batters in order.

The Lions struggled to get the bats going, only recording 1 hit through the first 4 innings. Nevertheless, Chestnut Ridge began to make some solid contact in the fifth inning.

Motter shut down the Jamestown bats, giving the Lions an opportunity to tie the game.

In the bottom of the fifth, Grace Lazor and Natalie Short notched back-to-back singles. With one out, Maya Wingard hit into a fielder's choice to third base. Kalani Spurlock pump faked a throw to first and hung on the ball for the fielders’ choice, catching Lazor in a rundown. Schaller tagged her out before Jamestown pitcher Miranda Biles struck out the next batter.

The Lions had another baserunning error in the next inning. Niki Shippey led off the sixth with a single and Motter walked later in the inning, putting runners at first and second with one out. Desiree Heider pinch ran for Motter. After Ella Whysong bunted the ball down the line to the third baseman, the throw was low and Whysong reached safely. Nevertheless, Heider thought the ball went down the line and she broke for third, while Shippey stayed at third. This led Shippey getting tagged out being forced into a rundown.

Biles struck out the last batter to end the inning.

The Muskies mustered an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Kiley Matters lined a hit down the line for a double, scoring Claire Jones.

In the bottom of the seventh, Jenna Mauck reached first on an error to kick off the inning. Wingard hit a chopper down the third base line that appeared to be right over the bag for a fair ball. There was no call made and Wingard was on first base. After consulting with the other umpires, the call on the field was a foul ball. Wingard then flew out to the warning track and Lexyn Corle had a deep flyout to end the game.

Jamestown won 3-0, moving on to the PIAA state semifinals.

Biles tossed a complete game shutout, striking out 9 batters, while only giving up 4 hits.

The Muskies were led on offense by Schaller who went 2 for 3 and Matters who went 2 for 4.

For the Lions, Motter went the distance, pitching 7 innings and striking out 13 batters.

Despite the loss, Chestnut Ridge head coach Greg Lazor said that "bulldog" Britni Motter is a lights-out pitcher everyday. Despite giving up the early home run, she struck out Thurber her other 3 at-bats. Lazor was also satisfied with the team's defense.

"Britni pitched well," the Ridge coach said. "We played defense well. Hats off to their pitcher. She kept us off balance for the first half of the game and that became the difference with the game."

Lazor wishes the team could have had more breaks go their way and better baserunning. Nonetheless, Lazor is proud of the team's effort and their play throughout District 5 playoffs and PIAA state playoffs.

"It's a very hard-working group," Lazor said. "It's a very tight group. They’ve come a long way to come this far and they fell short a little bit today. Our team I think can go a little farther in this, but some things went against them today, and it's just the way it goes. But the effort that they give day in and day out is unbelievable."

Lazor is grateful to have coached all 4 seniors on the roster: Heider, Corle, Alyssa Henderson, and Shelbi Sabo.

"They’re great leaders and have always been great leaders," Lazor said. "Our catcher (Henderson) is one of the most competitive people I’ve ever met in my life, and my third baseman (Corle) is one of the friendliest people I’ve ever met in my life. The two girls on the bench have contributed a lot through the years so we’re going to miss them. They’re good kids."

Chestnut Ridge finishes the year, 17-4.
